Tables just as all other furniture designed by the Shakers where conceived each with a special function in mind. They had to serve a specific purpose as well as answer to the general fundament of being pragmatic and spiritual at the same time. there is the question of why they exist as well as the question of how they exist. The first is answered by a rational approach, the second by a spiritual. This combination of head and heart was what produced the overwhelming integrity in their appearance. In order for heaven on earth being able to function in physical reality required the ability to compromise in a fashion that includes a true sense of equality and generosity. Both sides had to be considered in equal terms. Not one dominating the other. The shakers due to extreme discipline have mastered this art of compromise in their designs. The result: integrity
